Cheap Agency vs. Cheap Freelancer vs. Cheap Studio: What You Actually Get

Sachin SharmaJune 24, 20264 min read

"Cheap" means something different depending on who you hire — a freelancer, a large agency running a discount, or a lean studio. Here's the real tradeoff at each price point.

"Cheap agency" searches usually turn up three very different kinds of vendors — a solo freelancer, a large volume-focused agency running a low-cost package, and a lean studio quoting tight because it's early-stage. They are not interchangeable, and the risk profile is different for each.

Cheap freelancer

Lowest hourly cost, but you become the project manager, QA lead, and design reviewer by default — those functions aren't included unless you explicitly negotiate them. Works well for a single well-defined feature; risky for a full product build from scratch.

Cheap/discount agency

Often means junior staff on your project with limited senior oversight, templated design, and a sales process optimized for closing deals fast rather than scoping them accurately — watch for vague deliverables and change-request-heavy contracts.

Lean studio quoting tight

A smaller studio without large agency overhead can sometimes offer genuinely senior work at a lower price than a bigger name — but you should verify this with a portfolio of real shipped products, not just a pitch deck.

  • Ask for 2–3 shipped, live products you can actually use — not screenshots.
  • Ask specifically who's assigned to your project and their seniority level.
  • Get the exact scope in writing, including what counts as a change request versus included work.
  • Confirm post-launch support terms before you sign, not after launch.

Price alone tells you almost nothing about which of these three you're actually getting. We fall into the lean-studio category — senior engineers only, real shipped work you can check, and pricing that reflects Delhi-based rates rather than Bay Area overhead, without cutting the corners that make cheap expensive later.
